and then one day i saw the world in color

Photograph and artwork by Kally Kahn, Andrew Molera Campground, Big Sur, CA.

Cassidy was an English Springer Spaniel, born on a farm in Patterson, CA in July 1991. Lisa and Mark met him when he was 8 weeks old, and about 10 pounds. He promptly picked us out, while his 4 brothers romped in the dirt. He was liberated from this sh**kicker town for $50. It was the best $50 Mark ever spent.

Lisa with Cassidy

Here is a picture of Cassidy with Lisa, when he was about 8 months old. He blew some chow on the ride back from the farm. Fortunately Lisa was holding him. Lisa's mom dubbed him the"little monkey," after he escaped their yard in L.A. and scratched up the door.

Sam and Cassidy

Samantha (above), usually called Sam, was Cassidy's foster mom in Berkeley. She was a fine bitch: a mix of Black Lab and Irish Shedder. Cassidy would leap on her every morning at 5am and chew her ears until she got up to play. Then he would wake his human companions by standing on their faces.

Jill and Cassidy

Cassidy had numerous people friends. Here is his amiga, Jill, holding him while he snoozes. Puppies like to chew a lot. Cassidy enjoyed chewing socks, furniture, and private undergarments. His "autograph" was everywhere.

Christmas puppy

California couldn't hold Cassidy for long: he was destined for New Jersey as a Christmas surprise for Mark's parents, Carol and Dick. After a few months of intensive training, Mark's sister Danielle and grandmother Julie smuggled him into Carol's house. Unable to wait until the big surprise, he announced himself with a series of barks from the basement. (Moral: you can only tell Carol she's hearing things for so long.)

Smell the flowers

Cassidy's zest for life reminded everyone to stop and smell the flowers. Here is Danielle with Cassidy in summer, 1992. He was vigilant when it came to protecting the yard from squirrels, stopping only to take an hourly swim in the family pool. To Carol's dismay, he undertook several excavations in the yard. Reason: Cassified Information.

Wet Puppy

Cassidy loved his swimming pool. Here he uses his bed to dry off after a refreshing dip. He helped to earn his keep by chomping the leaves off the water's surface, and practicing his water ballet, like his beloved mom, Carol. Some of his more complex moves included the figure-8, the backscratcher, and the spouting nose fountain.

Birthday Cake

What a life!

Birthdays are to be celebrated, and Cassidy's was no exception. This sumptuous cake was supplemented by plenty of loving attention from the family. As you can see, Cassidy's magnetic effect on women was well established.

Carol and Cassidy

Puppylove was highly contagious. Here are Carol and Cassidy when he's about 1 1/2 years old. As you can see, his paws were white when he wasn't digging in the dirt. Dick enjoyed his friendship as well, treating him to nice walks and treats. Mark's business partner Dan, another dog aficionado, met Cassidy too. He had fun frolicking with Dan's wonderful dogs, like the fluffy, white family favorite, Snow.

My first teddy

Mischief and dogz go paw-in-paw. A puppy unattended in a big house can get into all sorts of trouble. Danielle was in tears one day, after Cassidy launched himself from the kitchen table, and devoured a 10-year old garlic wreath in Carol's kitchen. "It looked like it snowed in the kitchen," Danielle said, with bits of garlic paper scattered everywhere. Deportation to California seemed imminent, and Carol put her foot down. To ease this wily behavior, Carol introduced him to teddies, which fast became his number one fetish. Above is one of his first teddies.

Teddy mauling skills

Here, Cassidy demonstrates how to properly maul a teddy. Hard button eyes and noses are best pulled off, to reveal the soft, fluffy stuffing inside. A good teddy session should leave the teddy soaked with slobber (hence the name of his stuffed lobster toy from Maine: The Slobster).

Loyal friend

He was a loyal and loving friend. When Mark was sick with food poisoning in NJ, Cassidy only left his side to eat and relieve himself outside. Unfortunately he spilled some beer on the picture.
